CIST Celebrates International Day of Peace

INTERNATION DAY OF PEACE ORGANISED BY CHILDREN-IN-SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
The International Day of Peace celebrated around the world annually on 21 September.
CIST commemorated this years peace day with the students and staff of Ekiti Anglican Diocesan High School, Ado-Ekiti. EADHS was chosen as an indicator of peace for the year 2017.
The days celebration began with the opening prayer, by, the Vice Principal of the school, Mr V.O. Obatinuadeyo. The Vice Principal after the prayer went ahead to give the opening address where he admonished the staff and students to pay attention and be ready to learn and gain additional knowledge.
Prof Ibiyinka Ogunlade, who anchored the programme, gave a Peace Talk. In her address to the children, she told them what the International Day of Peace was about. She gave a brief history of this day and the involvement of the United Nations. She spoke to the participants about TOGETHER FOR PEACE, the theme for the year, encouraging the participant to live in peace with one another, respecting everyone. She also said in her speech, the basic ingredient in building the culture of peace is education. She went on to state that a qualitative and functional education goes beyond the conventional and formal schooling system. Hence the role and importance of an organisation such as CIST, with the aim of popularising science and technology among children for self-reliance.
When she was done with the peace talk, some other Peace activities followed, which included;
1. Peace Breathing Activities
2. Demonstration Talk on Be the Peace, by Abadariki Adebukola, a corps member attached to CIST.
This was followed by Pen and Pencil activities where the students were asked to write on What is Peace to me.
At exactly 12:00 noon, moment of peace, as authorized by the United Nations was observed. Led by Prof Ibiyinka Ogunlade, all present rose and observed a minute silence for victims of war, who had lost their homes, families and lives. This ended with a phrase: May peace prevail on Earth.
Mr Akintunde a staff of the school made contributions also, stating that peace was both horizontal and vertical. He stressed that one must have peace with God, as well as, with man.
A student, Miss Peace Okeke was decorated as Ambassador of Peace with CIST lapel pin by Prof Ibiyinka Ogunlade, Executive Director of CIST.
The Vice Principal in his closing remark told the students all they had learnt was not just for the present but also the future, and that lessons will be valuable to them in the years to come.
The closing prayer was given by the Home mistress of the school at 12:10 pm.
110 students and 10 members of staff registered for the seminar.
